KindredMind Voice Companion Now Available Worldwide
Originally started in Ontario by a dementia family caregiver and tech entrepreneur, KindredMind answers calls from loved ones with dementia in the family caregiver's own voice, in sixteen languages. The service resolves approximately 90 percent of dementia-related calls without caregiver intervention and is now available worldwide.
Stories about KindredMind
Coverage from publications exploring caregiving, dementia care innovation, and voice technology.
KindredMind co-founder Kirstin Thomas joins Lori La Bey at AlzheimersSpeaks to discuss why repetitive dementia phone calls are an unmet emotional need rather than a behaviour problem, and what she built when she could not find what her mom needed.
An in-depth look at how KindredMind helps families navigating dementia stay connected. The caregiver's own voice, simulated presence therapy, and the case for technology that supports rather than replaces.

Key numbers and context for your story.
Every call KindredMind handles follows the Alzheimer Society of Canada's published guidelines for dementia-friendly communication. The companion never corrects a patient's reality, never dismisses a fear, and always redirects toward comfort and reassurance.
KindredMind is grounded in simulated presence therapy, a peer-reviewed approach in which a familiar voice recording is used to reduce anxiety and agitation in people with dementia. A 2024 randomized controlled trial (PubMed 38646703) found meaningful reductions in distress and caregiver burnout when familiar voice presence was combined with standard care.
Developed by Naomi Feil, validation therapy holds that the emotions of people with dementia are real and meaningful, even when the memory behind them is not. KindredMind enters the patient's reality with empathy, acknowledges what they are feeling, and meets fear with warmth rather than redirection or correction.
"Every caregiver deserves a moment to breathe. Until KindredMind, nothing existed to do both. Nothing answered a parent's anxiety in the voice they love most while also giving the caregiver back the moments they need to be human. KindredMind does not replace the family. It amplifies the caregiver, so they can be present for everyone they care for, including themselves."
