The two problems most dementia phones do not solve
There are two phone problems in dementia care, and almost every product on the market only solves one of them.
The first problem is that the phone your mom has stopped working for her. Smartphones become unrecognizable. Touch screens stop responding the way she expects. Numbers feel impossible. RAZ, GrandPad, and Jitterbug all exist because of this first problem, and each of them does a reasonable job of giving a person with Alzheimer's or dementia a phone they can actually use.
The second problem is the one those products do not solve. When your mom calls, sometimes ten times before lunch, she is not calling because something is wrong. She is calling because the anxiety that resets with every memory gap can only be settled by hearing your voice. And no matter how simple her phone is, that voice is not always going to be on the other end. The KindredMind Phone is the only big button photo dial phone built to solve both problems as one product. Mom gets a phone she can actually use, and when she presses your photo, the person she is reaching for actually answers.
How button 1 works
When your phone arrives, button 1 has your photo on it and a number underneath. That number is yours alone, a dedicated KindredMind line we have provisioned for your family. When your mom presses your photo, the phone dials that number.
What happens next is what every dementia care professional has been trained to do, except now it happens every time, day or night, even when you cannot get to the phone. The voice she hears is yours, warm, patient, present. The conversation is grounded in everything you have told KindredMind about her, her name for you, the people she loves, the things that bring her back to herself. She gets exactly what she was reaching for, and the call ends with comfort.
Your phone keeps ringing too, if you want it to. KindredMind never gets in your way. You see the missed call. You see the summary of the conversation when you have a moment. You choose what to do with it.
For families with more than one caregiver
In our Care Circle plan, the KindredMind Phone arrives with up to four family member photos already on the buttons, each one routing to that person's own KindredMind number, each one answering in that person's own voice. Mom presses your photo and hears you. She presses her son's photo and hears her son. She presses her grandson's photo and hears her grandson.
Five buttons stay open for the family to add anyone else over time. We will reprint and reship the button strip for the cost of postage.
Why a corded landline
Every other dementia phone on the market is battery-powered. RAZ is a touchscreen smartphone. GrandPad is a tablet. Jitterbug is a flip phone. Each of those products solves the simplicity problem in its own way, and each of them depends on the person with dementia remembering to charge it, keep track of it, and use the touchscreen.
The KindredMind Phone is a corded landline. It plugs into the standard phone jack next to her chair. It cannot be lost. It cannot run out of battery. The handset is heavy enough to feel familiar to a generation that grew up holding handsets. The buttons are large, the photos are clear, and the only thing she needs to remember is the face of the person she wants to call.
Designed for the dementia stage where photos still work
The big button photo dial phone is built for the window of dementia where someone can no longer reliably use a smartphone or remember names from a contact list, but can still recognize a face on a button and press it. That window covers most of the mild-to-moderate stages of Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, and mixed dementias, and it can also fit post-stroke cognitive changes where the person retains face recognition and initiates calls on her own.
If your loved one is in a later stage of dementia and no longer reaches for the phone unprompted, the KindredMind Phone is not the right tool for this season of care. We would rather tell you that now than ship a product into a home where it will sit unused. In those cases, our voice companion still helps caregivers who answer the calls themselves, but the photo dial hardware is built for the years when she still calls you on her own.
How it compares
Year 1 cost reflects the lowest publicly listed plan from each provider as of May 2026, including shipping and activation where applicable. Prices in USD for comparability.
| Solution | Phone type | Year 1 cost (USD) | Answers in caregiver's voice | Pre-configured at shipping | Care plan included |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KindredMind Phone (annual Essential, phone included) | Corded landline | $1,449 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| RAZ Memory Cell Phone | Touchscreen smartphone | $589 to $739 | No | Partial (caregiver portal setup) | Service only |
| GrandPad | Touchscreen tablet | $780 to $1,068 | No | Partial (admin setup via GrandPad Central) | Service only |
| Jitterbug Flip2 | Flip phone | $300 to $540 | No | No | Service only |
| TeleCalm | No hardware | $240 | No, blocks calls | N/A | Service only |
| Generic big-button photo phone | Corded landline | $43 to $50 | No | No | None |
KindredMind is the most expensive option in year one. It is also the only option where the call gets answered. Every other product on this list ends the same way: your mom calls, you cannot pick up, and she is alone on the line.
What ships in the box
Each KindredMind Phone ships with the handset and base unit, a printed button card with your photos already in place, a phone cord, and a one-page setup card that walks through the only step left, plugging it in. The phone is pre-programmed with your dedicated KindredMind number on button 1, or up to four numbers on the Care Circle plan.
Onboarding completes before the phone ships. That means voice recording, intake about your loved one, and photo upload all happen first, in the KindredMind app, in about thirty minutes. The phone leaves our Etobicoke facility within two business days of onboarding completion. Canadian customers receive the phone five to seven business days after that. United States customers receive the phone seven to fourteen business days after that.
How the phone is included with your annual plan
All annual KindredMind plans include the KindredMind Phone at no extra cost, plus one month of service free. A flat shipping and setup fee of thirty-nine ninety-nine Canadian dollars, or twenty-nine ninety-nine US dollars, is added at checkout. If your loved one already has a working phone setup, you can decline the phone at checkout for a forty-two ninety-nine Canadian dollar credit on your annual price, or thirty ninety-nine US dollars. No shipping fee applies.

See annual plansCommon questions
Will the KindredMind Phone work with my mom's existing phone line?
Yes. The phone is a standard analog landline phone that plugs into any phone jack. If she has a working landline service through her phone company or care facility, this phone replaces her existing handset and plugs into the same jack. We do not provide phone service. We provide the phone and the KindredMind number on button 1.
What if she does not have a landline?
A simple landline service through your local phone provider typically runs ten to twenty dollars a month. Many families set this up specifically for the KindredMind Phone. Some care facilities provide a phone jack at no charge to residents.
Why is there a shipping and setup fee?
The fee covers the cost of fulfillment from our Etobicoke facility, photo printing on your button card, programming your dedicated KindredMind number into the phone, and physical shipping. The phone itself is included free with your annual plan. The fee is thirty-nine ninety-nine Canadian dollars or twenty-nine ninety-nine US dollars, charged once at checkout.
Can the photo buttons be changed later?
Yes. You can upload new photos at any time through your KindredMind dashboard. We will reprint and ship a new button card for the cost of postage.
Does the phone require Wi-Fi or a smartphone app?
No. The phone is a corded landline. There is nothing to charge, nothing to update, and no app on the phone itself. All of the AI happens on the KindredMind side of the call.
What number does button 1 dial?
Each KindredMind family is provisioned with a dedicated ten-digit number. That number lives on button 1 of the phone and nowhere else, unless you choose to share it. When your loved one presses your photo, the phone dials that number, and KindredMind answers in your voice.
What stage of dementia is this designed for?
The KindredMind Phone works best for mild to moderate dementia, where your loved one still initiates calls independently. If she is in a later stage and no longer uses the phone on her own, the KindredMind Phone is not the right tool, and we would rather you know that now.
How long does shipping take?
We ship from Etobicoke, Ontario, within two business days of your onboarding completion. Canadian customers receive the phone five to seven business days after that. United States customers receive the phone seven to fourteen business days after that.
What is the return policy on the phone?
KindredMind annual plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you cancel within 30 days of your annual plan starting, we refund your annual prepay minus any service used. The phone is yours to keep in all scenarios. The shipping and setup fee is non-refundable as it covers fulfillment work already completed.
